Keep walking on Ho Pui Tsuen Road for another 20 minutes until you arrive at a campsite. Take right from the campsite to head to the reservoir and the family walk. you can also take a small detour from the campsite and check out the mini waterfall.

Crossing the campsite there is a gradual incline and most strenous part of the hike but its all shaded so that’s rewarding specially if you are hiking during summer months.

You have made it to the top of the hike now it’s all a flat walk from here. As it’s a loop walk you can head straight from here and see the ‘bamboo forest’ first or take a left and start with the reservoir.

The water of the reservoir is used for irrgating the agricultural lands in the northwest of New Territories.

Walk along the S -shaped bridge to get to the starting point of the 2.1kms family walk.

Starting point

Walking through the woods and the flat dirt trail, was very peaceful and you could actually hear birds chirpping. This was one of the best parts of the hike. Soon you will arrive at the bamboo forest tunnel which felt like a mini version of Arashiyama in Japan. You can snap a lot of pictures for your instagram here.

Bamboo forest

Cross this part of the hike and head to the next scenic spot from where you can see the other side of the reservoir. In such a short span of time, you get so many different views. This hike is an absolute visual treat.

Other side of the reservoir

Once you have completed the loop walk trace your steps back to the village and head for minibus # 71 to Yuen Long.

On your way back you can also take a brief stop at this cafe which is close to the village, before heading to the minibus. The great thing was that there were quite a few options for vegetarians as well and it was all quite tasty and well deserved after the hike on a hot day.

Useful tips

  • Do this hike early in the morning when the water is calm to get a perfect reflection shot

  • Carry some snacks and enough water with you as there is no food and drinks option near the reservoir, just at the start of the hike near the village
